Furosemide aka Lasix is probably the most commonly used diuretic. It is used to reduce body water content (usually by inducing urination) for two conditions: hypertension or edema. It is the #1 treatment for edema associated with congestive heart failure (aka left-sided) but is also used for patients with cirrhosis or renal impairment. It is a loop-diuretic, meaning it acts on the Loop of Henle in the kidney. As it is NOT a potassium-sparing diuretic, the most common adverse effect is electrolyte imbalance – patients’ labs should be monitored as well as input & output. The word lasix stands for “lasts six hours, ” referring to the duration of the drug.

Lasix for weight loss???

Hello, I am in need of some medical advice. I am a 40 year old female, am over weight by about 30 pounds and have developed high blood pressure in the last 6 months. In addition to putting me on a restricted diet and a new excercise plan, my physician prescribed Lasix, said it would lower my BP and help me lose weight....This is a new doctor as I have moved to a new town and am not entirely comfortable with his diagnosis. I agree totally that I need to excercise and lose weight, but am not sure about the pills....any advice?

    • BUN is a blood marker for kidney conditions. It can become elevated if the kidneys aren't functioning properly. Together with the creatinine level, the numbers can provide clues to the cause of the kidney dysfunction. For …gh, it's hard to interpret isolated lab findings with no supporting medical history and exam. Although people here will be able to give you an idea of what it COULD be, only your doctor can adivse you properly. Take care.
